Dolomites, Italy

Nicola Odemann is a photographer from Muenster, Germany. Her submission includes some outstanding photos from a hiking trip in the Dolomites, in northern Italy. Northern Italy is high on my list of future travel destinations, and her submission makes me all the more eager to visit there someday. Her images are all captured with film on a Nikon F65; I always admire the dedication it takes to have no idea how things will turn out when only using a film camera. Nicola was selected by Issue Four photographer Justin Mullet.

Tell us about the location in the photos.

Ever since going to the Dolomites for the first time, I cannot help but always feel the need to return there. That is why last summer we took the train to Brixen, a small town in South Tyrol, and started our hiking trip across the Northern Dolomites. We walked for one week until we arrived at our destination, Alleghe. Hiking there was such a unique experience as the mountains are so beautiful. We got to stay at the most amazing alpine cabins and woke up early every day to see the sunrise.

There’s nothing like a sunrise in the mountains when you get to witness how every sunbeam changes the world right in front of you. After the early morning wonder we would pack our backpacks and just started walking across meadows, mountain passes, high plaines and summits. The dolomites are full of wonder and beauty is everywhere and I cannot wait to be back there again.

How did you get started in photography?

As I was always interested in photography, I discovered Flickr as a teenager and since then have felt the need of taking photos myself. Eventually my dad gave my his old camera and I began taking photos of everything around me. My hometown is located really close to the mountains, which is why I spent a lot of my time outside. Thus, I used photography as a means to capture my memories and adventures on film.

Does anything in particular influence your photography style?

The world influences me a lot and especially the part we as humans play in this world. Having spent a lot of my time in the mountains, I experienced how small and insignificant humans are like when compared to these giants. Besides capturing memories, that is what i try to show in my photos.

What photography gear do you use?

I use a Nikon F65 with a Sigma 28-200mm Aspherical IS lens and whatever film I can get my hands on.

Are there any products you swear by?

My old Nikon F65. It is the old camera my father once gave to me and I still use it today.

What is your dream adventure photography location?

Patagonia. The sheer mention of this place makes me get utterly excited..
